Popeye taught many the importance of eating their spinach

1. In 2004, the Empire State Building was lit up in spinach green to honour Popeye’s 75th birthday.
2. The film Popeye, with Robin Williams, was made in Malta in 1980. Its set
then became a theme park called Popeye Village or Sweethaven Village.
3. Originally, Popeye gained his strength in 1929 by rubbing the head of the rare Whiffle Hen. Spinach came into the story only in 1932.
4. William “Billy” Costello spoke Popeye’s voice in cartoons until he was sacked for “bad behaviour”.
5. In 1935 Jack Mercer became Popeye’s voice in cartoons, which he was for more than 40 years.
Olive Oyl has a brother called Castor Oyl
6. From 1938-1942, Mercer was married to Margie Hynes, who was the voice of Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl.
7. Popeye became the first cartoon character to have a statue in his honour when a Popeye statue was put up in Crystal City, Texas, in 1937.
8. Olive Oyl has a brother called Castor Oyl.
9. US spinach growers have credited Popeye with a 33 per cent increase in spinach consumption.
10. In Spain, the name Olive Oyl is seen as an insult to the olive tree so she has been renamed Rosario.
